STAGECOACH
Zero Emission Buses
Client: Stagecoach Group
Role: Architectural Design & Project Management Support
Ongoing Since: 2020
Since 2020, Azuora Architects have been proud to support Stagecoach in their ambitious transition to a zero-emissions fleet across the UK. Working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary project teams, Azuora has provided architectural design expertise and project management input focused on the delivery of cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at bus depots and stations.
Our work includes the development and integration of high-capacity electric charging solutions into existing and new transport infrastructure. This encompasses feasibility studies, spatial and technical design for charging systems, planning coordination, and the delivery of construction phases across multiple locations.
A major milestone was achieved in 2020 with the installation of Scotland’s first Pantograph overhead charger at Kilmarnock Bus Station. This innovative technology enables fast, on-the-route charging of electric buses in as little as six minutes—conveniently occurring during standard passenger boarding and alighting, reducing downtime and supporting continuous operations.
Following the success of Phase 1, Azuora continues to support the ongoing Phases 2 and 3, which aim to expand the network with a total of four Pantograph charging stations, further accelerating the rollout of electric buses and the supporting infrastructure across the country.
These efforts are more than just technological upgrades—they are a critical part of a wider strategy to reduce carbon emissions, improve urban air quality, and contribute to national and local government net zero commitments. By supporting the shift to electric public transport, this work plays a vital role in promoting cleaner air, sustainable urban mobility, and the health and wellbeing of communities.
Azuora Architects are proud to be contributing to a greener, more efficient future for UK public transport.
